KNOWLEDGE BASE · MARKET ACTIVITY
What is unusual crypto market activity?
Unusual market activity occurs when a market begins behaving noticeably differently from its recent pattern. It may appear through volume, acceleration, price movement or differences between exchanges.
Not every fast move is the same
A sudden price move can develop for many reasons. The size of the move alone therefore provides limited information without context.
Markets Understood considers several characteristics of market activity when determining why a move stands out.
Volume and acceleration
Rising trading volume can indicate that more activity is entering a market. The speed at which price and volume change can also matter.
When several characteristics accelerate together, a market may stand out more strongly from its recent behaviour.
Deviation from recent behaviour
What counts as unusual depends on the market itself. A heavily traded market has a different normal range from a quieter market.
Comparing current behaviour with a market's own recent history can therefore be more useful than applying one fixed threshold everywhere.
Cross-exchange context
When unusual activity appears on both Bitvavo and Kraken, this can provide context about whether the move is visible more broadly.
A strong difference between exchanges can also be informative. See Bitvavo vs Kraken for EUR spot trading.
Unusual does not automatically mean attractive
Abnormal market behaviour is not a standalone buy or sell signal. A rapid move may continue, slow down or reverse.
MU uses unusual activity as a reason to investigate further context rather than as a guarantee of future direction.
Every market has its own normal behaviour
Recognising an anomaly first requires a reference. A two percent move may be exceptional for one market while remaining within the normal daily behaviour of another. The same applies to trading volume and speed. Comparing current activity with the market's own recent behaviour can therefore be more informative than applying one universal threshold.
This allows present conditions to be viewed relative to earlier periods of similar length and market activity.
Price and volume provide more context together
A price move without a clear change in volume presents a different picture from a move in which trading volume accelerates at the same time. The speed at which those changes develop can matter as well. When price, volume and acceleration all deviate together, there is more reason to investigate the market than when only one measurement briefly spikes.
How can temporary or false spikes appear?
Short-lived anomalies can result from a single large order, temporarily thin liquidity or activity that is visible on only one trading venue. Such a move may disappear quickly when new buy and sell orders enter the market. It is therefore useful to examine whether the deviation persists and whether similar behaviour is visible across other relevant EUR markets.
Why timeframe and data freshness matter
An unusual move on a 15m timeframe may look relatively small within a 1h view. At the same time, stale market data may describe activity that has already passed. Detection therefore needs to be interpreted together with the selected timeframe and the moment at which the underlying data was received.

From detection to context
When market activity becomes sufficiently notable, trend, risk, invalidation and other factors can be considered before a trade plan concept is developed.
