CRYPTO HEATMAP EXPLAINED

Understanding the Crypto Heatmap for EUR spot markets

The Markets Understood Crypto Heatmap shows where price movement and EUR market activity come together across Bitvavo and Kraken. Each tile represents one exchange market, so you can still see whether a pair belongs to Bitvavo or Kraken. Combined brings both sources into one view without averaging them into a single market move. The Heatmap is designed for fast market orientation: first identify what stands out, then explore the wider market activity context. New to heatmaps? What do tile colour and size show?

Tile colour is based on percentage price movement within the selected timeframe. Negative and positive moves appear on opposite sides of the scale, while smaller changes remain closer to neutral. Tile size represents EUR activity over the same timeframe. A large tile therefore does not automatically mean that price is rising or falling strongly. Size and colour answer two different questions: how much EUR activity is present, and how is price moving within that window?

5m, 15m, 1h, 4h and 1d

A market can look very different over five minutes than it does over four hours or one day. The timeframe selector lets you view the same market across different horizons. Shorter timeframes react more quickly to recent acceleration and noise, while longer timeframes provide broader context. Markets Understood does not turn that choice into a forecast. The selected timeframe simply determines the window used for price movement and EUR activity. See also 15m versus 1h.

Bitvavo, Kraken and Combined

The exchange filter lets you select Bitvavo, Kraken or Combined. In Combined, every exchange market remains a separate row and tile. ETH-EUR on Bitvavo and ETH-EUR on Kraken can therefore both appear. This is intentional because activity, liquidity and price movement can differ between trading venues. Keeping the sources separate preserves that context instead of creating an artificial average. Read more in the Bitvavo versus Kraken comparison.

Why EUR spot markets?

MU focuses this Heatmap on EUR spot markets. Spot means the underlying crypto asset is traded directly against the euro, without combining the view with futures, leverage or derivative positions. This keeps the tool aligned with the EUR markets that Markets Understood follows as its first market layer. For more background, read what EUR spot trading is and how spot differs from futures and leverage.

Market View is context, not a signal

Market View above the Heatmap summarises the breadth of the selected exchange and timeframe using all valid markets in that selection. It can indicate a quiet, mixed, positive or negative market environment, including stronger variants when breadth is pronounced. It is not calculated from only the visible Top 50, Top 75 or Top 100, so reducing the number of displayed tiles does not change the underlying breadth calculation. Market View is market context, not a buy or sell signal.

Data freshness and limitations

The Heatmap uses current market data, but no market feed is literally delay-free. Network traffic, exchange APIs, processing and publication all take time. MU therefore shows status and update information alongside the tool. A tile that stands out only means that price movement and/or activity is notable within the selected window. It does not prove future direction, manipulation or a so-called pump. Read more about market-data freshness and how MU approaches unusual crypto market activity.

Frequently asked questions about the Crypto Heatmap

Is the largest tile the best market?

No. Tile size represents more EUR activity, not quality or future returns.

Does green mean buy and red mean sell?

No. Colour only describes price movement within the selected timeframe.

Why can the same pair appear twice in Combined?

Because Bitvavo and Kraken remain separate markets. Markets Understood does not average them together.

Does search or Top 50/75/100 change the market calculation?

No. Search and result limits only determine which valid results are displayed. The underlying market calculation remains unchanged.
